Day 49: 30 December 2010

What is in this photo: A ghost bus!

Why I like this photo: I was taking some general night time touristy shots in London tonight, and I really like how the bus came out not quite part of the photo. I think I like it because I was bound to take at least one photo of a bus while here, but if I was to only to take one, I'd want it to be cool like this one is. Luckily, I have a digitial camera, so I can take heaps and heaps of them.

Day 48: 29 December 2010

What is in this photo: A castley thing in the mist

Why I like this photo: I like the mystery of the misty castle, and I like how the streetlight made lots of of little circles all over the show.

Day 47: 28 December 2010

What is in this photo: Not much of a snowman

Why I like this photo: There was a snowman here, and then it rained and sort of melted away. I think that along with the themes temporal passing that have been developing through this project, I think that this also represents one of other main motifs, that of a sort of beauty in decay. I'm surprised that 47 days in there isn't much of it (or more traffic cones for that matter).

Day 46: 27 December 2010

What is in this photo: Jigsaw puzzle pieces

Why I like this photo: I like jigsaws, I like the process, generally speaking, much more than the result. I think that's what I'm trying to say here.

Sunday, December 26, 2010

Day 45: 26 December 2010

What is in this photo: A Stag

Why I like this photo: I like the way that the Deer is the subject, but the treelined path recedes back to that very interesting gate. I saw this oppurtunity and had to take it. Also: It's a deer! and I was close enough to ctake this picture.

Day 44: 25 December 2010

What is in this photo: Fun in the snow

Why I like this photo: We went out after Christmas lunch for a lovely walk and then stopped in the snowy field on the way back. I just think that this photo captures some happiness and joyousnessness.

(that's Rach, her sister, and her Dad at the back capturing the same scene from the opposite angle)

Friday, December 24, 2010

Day 43: 24 December 2010

What is in this photo: A cowboy avoiding a Zombie Attack

Why I like this photo: Oooh... mixed media! I've been thinking about this for a couple of days, but today I had a few minutes to quickly draw up the dark foresty background. And it's about time that I put some lego people up here.

Day 42: 23 December 2010

What is in this photo: More winter magic

Why I like this photo: It's more wintry magic in blighty. I'd seen this view every day on the way upstairs to bed and when I finally felt confident enough to capture it properly I gave it a go. I like how the window is textured, sort of saying that our views of the world can be altered so easily.

Wednesday, December 22, 2010

Day 41: 22 December 2010

What is in this photo: The waterfall in the garden

Why I like this photo: I just think it came out really well. Theres some motion captured in the water and a stillness captured in the snow and the rocks.

Day 40: 21 December 2010

What is in this photo: Some frozen leaves

Why I like this photo: I've been fascinated by the shapes that the ice is forming on different surfaces. I like particularly the spiky shapes shown here. I also like how there is some very strident greenery still, a sense of nature fighting with itself to keep balance.

Day 39: 20 December 2010

What is in this photo: Some Christmas Lights.

Why I like this photo: We were walking back home from the bus stop when we saw this house. The combination of the streetlight and the christmas lights was really magical and we were stopped in our tracks. I think that I managed to capture part of that here. Every photo means learning something more about taking photos.

Tuesday, December 21, 2010

Day 38: 19 December 2010

What is in this photo: The Shambles in York

Why I like this photo: When the first Harry Potter movie came out we were all struck by how magical Diagon Alley seemed to be. How it was an echo of a world lost. I have learned more and more through my travels that for some people Diagon Alley just looks the street they walk down on the way to work everyday.

Day 37: 18 December 2010

What is in this photo: A frozen cigarette butt

Why I like this photo: I think that the colours in this one are really wintry; that even though it shows something that has been discarded it somehow captures the beauty of winter. Also, ciggarettes are supposed to burn; not be frozen!

Saturday, December 18, 2010

Day 36: 17 December 2010

What is in this photo: A little bridge.

Why I like this photo: Ever since we got here I've been wanting to take a photo of this little bridge. I think it's really neat. I woke up in the morning, looked out the window and there had been a little bit of snow over night. I like this photo because its an example of how everything looks a little bit prettier with just a light dusting of snow.

Friday, December 17, 2010

Day 35: 16 December 2010

What is in this photo: a decoration in the Christmas Tree

Why I like this photo: This is a decoration on the tree at Rachel's parent's house, where we are spending this Christmas. In recent years Christmas has been about developing new traditions for the two of us. This year is about her family Christmas, and I'm enjoying learning about what that means for her.

Addendum: If you've been following for a while, you may notice that this is the first update that is taller than it is wide. I don't think that this will happen very often. Conversely, if this is your first visit, nothing should seem terribly different about it.

Day 34: 15 December 2010

What is in this photo: A weary, wintery traveller

Why I like this photo: Looking at this photo transports me back to this moment. I think it has a softness that speaks to the (at least my) imagination.

(Also, don't worry, the traveller is Rachel)

Day 33: 14 December 2010

What is in this photo: Carousel at Bury St Edmunds

Why I like this photo: I don't really think it's possible to be swept up in the magic of a carousel, even if you aren't allowed to ride on it. As I've grown older I wonder how much of that is also because the music that they play are always waltzes.

Day 32: 13 December 2010

What is in this photo: A leaf trapped in some ice

Why I like this photo: I think it must be because I'm on holiday, but again this is about transcience. Or, perhaps more circuitiously, temporary permanance. The idea that the leaf was floating along then was stopped, and then before long was set free again.

Thursday, December 16, 2010

Day 31: 12 December 2010

What is in this photo: Abandoned scarf.

Why I like this photo: I'm not sure if someone put their scarf here for safe keeping, or if they are trying to reference the latest Harry Potter movie or if the tree was very cold.

Day 30: 11 December 2010

What is in this photo: Rachel on the skytrain in Singapore

Why I like this photo: I like the way that Rach's reflection is somewhat translucent. Thsi photo is about transcience. The subject is both in transit within the real context of the image and also transient in the space of the image itself.

Day 29: 10 December 2010

What is in this photo: Our bags all packed and ready to go to England.

Why I like this photo: Yay! Holiday! (also, holiday is the reason that there has been a bit of a lull, lots ready to go, only just got a power adaptor so can use the computer)

Thursday, December 9, 2010

Day 28: 9 December 2010

What is in this photo: Some cool magic crystal ball thingies

Why I like this photo: I like this because it came together. I accidentally knocked over a vase that has lots of these in it, and a few if them, the ones in the photo, ended up on the floor. I saw the oppurtunity and grabbed it. Needed something reflective: found an empty biscuit tin. Turned off the light, turned on the flash; and hooray! It worked. I quite like it.

Wednesday, December 8, 2010

Day 27: 8 December 2010

What is in this photo: A swan.

Why I like this photo: Long day. Rototrua. Team Christmas Dinner. Swan. Write more later.

Tuesday, December 7, 2010

Day 26: 7 December 2010

What is in this photo: An anachronistic sign

Why I like this photo: While we all complain about Christmas coming to shops earlier and earlier every year, it looks like some is getting ready for Guy Fawkes well ahead of time!

Monday, December 6, 2010

Day 25: 6 December 2010

What is in this photo: Rachel and her little Sackgirl friend from Little Big Planet.

Why I like this photo: Tonight was the last night of teaching for our classes this year. Some of our students got us a present: Silly wigs and silly glasses! Rach was talking about how she liked hers, and I pointed out that it turned her into her Little Big Planet friend, and so she let me take the photo. We love Little Big Planet.

Well, I love it. Rach quite likes it.

Sunday, December 5, 2010

Day 24: 5 December 2010

What is in this photo: Lights up on the storefront at Motat for Christmas

Why I like this photo: We just had a delightful Christmassy time at Motat. They have lights up in the Victorian Village and they are selling mulled wine and there is a brass band and people walking around in period character. It was all so very.... Christmassy.

Saturday, December 4, 2010

Day 23: 4 December 2010

What is in this picture: Some of the people from Stepz Dance Studio doing the annual floorshow.

Why I like this picture: It was, in the end, fun to do the dance. More fun than I'd admit really. Also, this is one of the rare occassions where I didn't take the photo that's on the blog, Rach did. And then I had a little bit of fun with photoshop. For those who weren't there, we did some dancing to "Thriller".

Friday, December 3, 2010

Day 22: 3 December 2010

What is in the photo: A receptacle for the placement of discarded goods for the environmental betterment.

Why I like this photo: A bunch of colleagues and friends from dancing went out tothe disturbingly named hyperstimulator.co.nz. Before we went in I took this photo. I suspected it would be prophetic and I was very right. I did pretty rubbish.

Thursday, December 2, 2010

Day 21: 2 December 2010

What is in this photo: Seasame Street Christmas Decorations

Why I like this photo: Because we are going to England for the bulk of December, we have decided not to put the tree up this year. I think that we all know why these ones got to come out anyway.

(also: the are new this year)

(also: there are more than just these two)

Wednesday, December 1, 2010

Day 20: 1 December 2010

What is in this photo: Mainframe Entertainment Villain Megabyte trying to infect my Laptop.

Why I like this photo: If you know the television programme ReBoot this will make a lot of sense, if it doesn't, I suggest you try and find it and watch it. It is most excellent.

Aside from the reference, I really like, again, how the lighting turned out here. Just a partial sillhouette on the villain. Maybe I'm having a bit of a negative week without realising it; two pictures of villians so far!

Day 19: 30 November 2010

What is in this photo: The note that greeted me on my arrival in my room in Wellington last night.

Why I like this photo: I was just rather surprised to see it there, and then after I went out it was still there. A sort permanance of the temporary.

Also, I like the sort of end of day lighting of it.
